Vitrification

AFP has technologies and experience in vitrifying many materials including the following:

  • Spent aluminum potliner (EPA waste code K088)
  • Incinerator & boiler ash
  • Electric arc furnace dust
  • Sludges (including metal plating and bio-sludge)
  • Fiberglass & container glass waste
  • Contaminated soils/sludge/mud
  • Auto shredder residue

The AFP vitrification process is robust and, unlike other conventional vitrification processes (e.g. joule-heated melters or plasma-arc melters), can handle materials with substantially high ionic character or with significant moisture content.

The AFP vitrification processes yields stable, fully-oxided materials that can pass TCLP (with or without additives, depending on the starting material).  These vitrified materials can be landfilled; however, with some process optimization, the vitrification process can yield value added products including:

  • Structural Fill & Construction Aggregate
  • Abrasives
  • Glass/Mineral Wool Insulation
  • Ceramic Tile
  • Proppants

Since AFP's vitrification process is a continuous, entrained flow reactor, it can be utilized to efficiently melt materials that are difficult to melt in conventional glass melters.  This is especially true of materials with low-infrared transmittance, such as basalts, that are easily handled in the AFP vitrification process.

AFP's vitrification process is currently the EPA's BDAT for K088 wastes
